Dear Aunt TUAW: What's wrong with Lion VNC?

Dear Aunt TUAW,

I recently upgraded to Lion 10.7 and have found that VNC (I use iteleport) on Lion has not been working. I have searched far and wide across the jungles and valleys of the interweb to no avail. I did find that I am not the only one having this problem. Any help you could provide would be much appreciated

Thanks,

Niko

Dear Niko,

Apple's Screen Sharing / Remote Desktop Server appears to have a bug related to mouse movement feedback. Auntie contacted iTeleport Mobile, who helpfully pointed her to this page. Apple says they're working on a fix.

In the meantime, iTeleport offers a workaround by suggesting you adjust your primary display so it lies to the left of all other displays.

What's more, Jahanzeb Sherwani of iTeleport promised to get in touch with you directly to help you work through your current problems. Expect a letter in your in-box. Thank you, Jahanzeb!

Hugs,

Auntie T.

I switched to a Samsung Series 9 and shelved my macbook pro until they fix the horrible performance and stability problems that lion introduced. Its a shame.

I downgraded back to Snow Leopard for the same reason. I understand sluggish performance on my end with only 2 GB of RAM, but VNC is flat out broken and has been since launch almost 2 months ago.

This would explain why when I was attempting to use VNC authentication to log in at the OS X login screen, I couldn't enter the password. I've since learned that you have to use your Mac username/password. As for the speed, I've only seen an increase in performance, although this could be because I recently upgraded my router. Performance-wise, it only uses 0.3 - 1.0% of my processor (2.13 GHz IC2D w/4 GB RAM).

What about those of us who experience slow VPN and do not have multiple monitors?

Oh, and one more thing....
ScreenSharing which used to use 2 or 3 percent of processor time now uses 20 or 30 percent of processor time.

I tried doing a screen sharing session with my Dad using iChat with me on Lion and him on Snow Leopard. The performance was so bad that every time his screen refreshed in any way it made the audio go choppy. It worked fine before before I upgraded to Lion. Hopefully 10.7.2 does something about that.

not only that, but apple's built in screen sharing app is having issues in lion its now taking foreverrr to connect to another mac in the network and its not the internet speed that is the cause
