MacBook Air, Mac mini drive strong Q3 sales

The NPD group released its sales data for the current quarter and things are looking good for Apple. Mac sales are up 22% year-over-year due primarily to the release of OS X Lion and new MacBook Air and Mac Mini hardware in July.

In a research note, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster crunched these numbers and presented a slightly conservative quarterly estimate. Munster believes sales climbed during the summer months due to this new hardware and will likely fall off in September after the initial enthusiasm wears off.

Taking this seasonal drop into account, Munster predicts Apple will sell 4.4 to 4.6 million Macs in the quarter, a 13%- 18% year-over-year increase. Munster also estimates Mac revenue will account for 20% of Apple's overall revenue in the current quarter.

Looking back at last quarter, Apple sold 3.9M Macs (14% yoy increase), but these were a mix of new MacBook Pros, iMacs and older MacBook Air and Mac mini models. With new hardware gracing almost every Mac product line except the Mac Pro, Mac sales should remain steady.

I run my company on Macs and the Minis have been very important to us. Can't have a whole lame tower doing some small job like cron jobs, everyday data input and so on. Thanks to Apple for making the Mini really awesome.

And I bet that most any other company would have discontinued the mini long ago. A couple of years ago, I would've bet money that at least one of the mini or tv would be gone by now....who would have thought that patience could be worth something in the business world??

I am actually quite happy with my mid 2011 Mac Mini. I actually think of it as a truly affordable Mac.

I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prices at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37" HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for. I use PennyJump.com

When the mac mini and the macbook air first came out, they were considered overpriced and underpowered, but just good enough for some early adopters to try them out. Since then, they've gone up in power and down in price. This happened to another product... the iPhone. Apple is getting rather good at this. It's amazing how they can get some early adopters to shake down the product and then release a 2nd or 3rd version and suddenly it's mindblowingly amazing. I was nonplused with the first mac Mini but now I'm salivating over the latest version (mac media center here I come!). I looked passed the macbook air previously to get my son a new macbook laptop for Christmas, and suddenly they update the airs and he's cursing the product cycle gods for not updating the Airs earlier.
