Apple Experience Center at Peking University riles students

Apple has constructed a promotional study center at Peking University, dubbed the Apple Experience Center. It's nice, with a glass enclosure and many Macs. Unfortunately for Apple, several university students are not happy about it.

The center occupies a third-floor, former study area in the school's main library of about 430 square feet. Students will be able to use a variety of Apple goodies and order some of their own at a discount. It's a combination of academics and consumerism that's familiar to American university students, but has some Chinese students concerned.

"It's totally against the spirit and environment of the library," said one student. "Apple should have discounts or give-back activities if they want self-promotion, other than introducing this commercial thing into a sacred place like this."

Others fear that the draw of new Apple hardware will further crowd the library, where study space is already scarce.

If you're a student at Peking University, let us know what you think of the Apple Experience Center.

I am an amateur Apple evangalist/Mac fanboy.

But I agree that this is a poorly thought out publicity stunt,
I hope that the school/library negotiated a stiff fee for the use of scarce resources.

And I share the opinion that a library, above all other buildings in the world, is a sacred place!

If I was forced to choose between computers and books, computers would lose everytime.

Everyone knows you only hang out at the library to meet chicks, and studies show that Apple customers get laid more. Suck it up guys, Apple is trying to help you out.

AHAHAHAHA... So violating the "sacred place" is okay if there is a discount?

Library? I remember those from back in the day... They had these primitive e-readers and computers called *books*. I know! it's hard to imagine! They were heavy, made out of something called "paper" and were incredibly thick compared to an iPad. Because they were so thick, libraries could only carry a few thousand books.

What's that? You say an iPad or laptop can hold millions of ebooks in a small corner of their hard drives and still have plenty of room for music and other stuff? Yes, I know, I know. But some people insist on reading archaic technology like books in the 21st century because it makes them feel smart, no matter how inefficient real books actually are...

you may want to reword your last statement.
real books are actually efficient. they may not be practical or portable but they are definitely not inefficient. studies have shown reading speeds on real books are higher.
think about it, the task is to read the content. on a book thats all you do. on an ipad/laptop you have tons of notifications coming in and the ability to procrastinate to no end. as you said, music, shows etc.
however, i find it funny that the library is "sacred"

Now thats a bad move on Apple's part as anyone who works in education knows that the library and study areas are sort of sacred ground you don't take it away from them............don't they have a main concourse at Peking University..........Mao must be spinning in his grave..........oooh wait he's not in a grave........

Good one! ;-)

And yes I also think this is quite out of place in a library ...
