Final Cut Pro X update adds "top feature requests"
Apple will release a major update to Final Cut Pro X, as well as a demo version that new customers can download and try out today. This update address the top user requests, according to Apple's senior director applications marketing, Richard Townhill.
In an interview with The Loop's Jim Dalrymple, Townhill noted that Apple has listened to requests from the application's professional users. "We listened to the pros and have taken their top feature requests and put them in this update."
New features include Xsan support, which will allow users to share files on the SAN across projects. Additionally, Rich XML import and export will bring third-party workflows into your project.
There's more, of course, including a new, 30-day free trial demo that will let users try before they buy. That's important as Final Cut Pro X customers depend on certain functionality and compatibility. An update that unexpectedly breaks a workflow is a real problem.
You'll remember that not all customers were happy with the release of Final Cut Pro X. Again, Richard Townhill says that Apple is listening. "We have very vocal customers and they told us what they think was missing. What we're doing today is answering those concerns."
Note that Final Cut Pro X requires a Mac with OS X 10.6.8 or later, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better, 2GB of RAM (4GB of RAM recommended), and an OpenCL-capable graphics card or Intel HD Graphics 3000 or later. You'll find full system requirements here.

So how do I update? I see nothing in software update regarding the update and no update utility in the final cut pro X folder.....?
thanks
L.
Bunch of **sholes, when do you actually need to import FCP7 stuff into FCPX and back? I keep hearing this ****, and you are just echoing what you hear from others.
Your Final Cut Pro 7 installation still runs, so finish your edits there!
It's fundamentally different, it has a whole new metaphor for editing.
And your Prores footage is 100% compatible, just not your sequences so it's not you lost all your video files.
Multi-cam is coming, so stfu and stop whining that it's not there. You probably don't even need it. Just a small percentage does.
Jeez, is your workflow the only one around? I produce video for software and I have to assume that the product will be updated in the future, so I'd Ike to import to FCPX and be done with 7. It doesn't sound like that will be possible at this point.
My choice now is whether I should start a neew project with X and be using both or sticking with a dead 7. As an early-ish adopter, it goes against my grain to lock into an application that's no longer being supported, but I don't like the idea of splitting my workflow across two applications for the same activity.
Anything on importing old FCP projects?

The XML import thing is a joke, too (since it's for FX, apparently, but doesn't seem to recognise anything FCP7 spits out).
FCPX = this F'ing CraP suX
That's like asking of you can use film with a digital camera.... Completely incompatible on a foundational level.

So I launched it full screen - normally have my TV set up as my viewer monitor and.... the viewer disappeared. Move it to the main screen and back and it appears in the right place but wow, they really need to sort out this full screen stuff properly for multi monitor use.

And, I'm proud to say I'm part of a community of Apple users that squeak their butts off and demand more for themselves and push Apple to perform for them. Hopefully with more squeaking, there'll be more features "rolled out" in future updates. Maybe Apple isn't abandoning the pros after all? We'll see...
September 20 2011 at 5:43 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo… I bought Final Cut Pro X on day 1onevia the App Store, and the update isn't registering as an update for me… attempting to install the updated version via the app store prompts me to buy it again, saying "Final Cut Pro 10.0 is already installed and was not purchased from the Mac App Store"…
…anyone else running into this? Solutions?
I bought FCPX on day 1 too, Now the update is showing in the "App Store" if it is still installed and it should appear as an update
