Dear Aunt TUAW: How can I add art to my USB stick folders?

Dear Aunt TUAW,

I have been trying to put a custom background image on a USB drive with little success. I know how to do this on a standard folder and a homemade DVD, but I can't seem to make it stay on the USB when I plug it back in. Do you have an idea as to what' I'm doing wrong?

Your loving nephew,

Ben

P.S. - Thanks for the cobbler recipe, and Janie says, "Hi."

Dear Ben,

Auntie's going to take a wild guess that you're not using HFS+ on your USB stick. If you need Windows compatibility, you're probably going to lose out on the pretty.

So Auntie's going to turn this one over to her nieces and nephews. Do you know of a FAT solution for putting art into USB stick folders? Let her know in the comments.

Hugs,

Auntie T.

It would be cool if Apple produced a flash drive that would enable you to use HFS+ on Windows, like an integrated version of MacDrive.

Um, I think they're asking how to change the background of the window (ie, the folder's 'wallpaper'), not just the icon.

Hi,

Yes I think you can do this. I just tried on a FAT32 USB sick and it worked.

Open the icon image you want in Preview, select all (cmd+a), and copy (cmd+c). Go to your folder's Get Info window, select the icon at the top of the window, and paste (cmd+v).

I format my USB stick as FAT32 and then create an autorun.inf with the following information
----------------------------
[autorun]
icon=\Pictures\MyIcon.ico
label=My Pen Drive
----------------------------
Create a directory in the USB Drive \Pictures\ and use an online FAVICON to convert the pen drive art into a Windows Icon and save it as \Pictures\MyIcon.ico for windows compatibility.
