The Callet: It's a case! It's a wallet!

Warning: This post contains an unusually high level of cheesy late-night TV ad phrases.

It's not often that we at TUAW get to review a product with that "As Seen On TV" label, but a new iPhone case that was sent for testing is exactly that. The Callet (US$19.95) is a simple product that takes a silicone wrap for iPhone 3G/3GS/4 and puts a few slots in the back where your drivers license and a credit card can be stashed. It's a case! It's a wallet! It's a Callet!

But wait, there's more! The Callet actually works quite well. Let's face it; it's not the sexiest iPhone case on the planet, but it does exactly what it's advertised to do -- protect your iPhone from bumps and scrapes as well as let you do away with the need to carry a wallet.

The silicone material is semi-transparent, so you can see the Apple logo glowing through the Callet. It comes in four -- count 'em -- four exciting colors: black, white, pink and blue. It also has holes in all the right places. There's a big honkin' gap at the bottom for your dock connector and speakers, another pair for the volume and mute switches, one for the headphone jack and noise cancellation mic, one for the on/off/sleep/wake switch, and even one for the SIM slot. But that's not all -- there's also a hole for the camera and flash! The only tears you'll cry will be tears of joy!

How much would you pay? At one easy payment of $19.95, the Callet isn't the cheapest silicone sleeve that I've seen, but hey -- how many of the others also act as a wallet? It really, really works! Yep, all you need to do is push a couple of credit cards or your driver's license in the back, and you're in business. You can set it and forget it.

You can order your Callet online now. Operators are standing by to take your call! Don't delay!

I like this one a LOT more:

Got it for the wife, and she constantly gets compliments on it. Nice looking, hard exterior, more difficult to see the cards contained, and far better protection for the phone. It's difficult to get in and out, but never takes it out, so there you have it.

My big concern is, wouldn't this make it an even _more_ attractive target for thieves? I mean, now they wouldn't just get your phone, but they'd get your driver's license and your credit card(s). Not a very attractive prospect if you ask me.

The Case-mate ID case is still better. I've used mine for the 3GS as well as the iPhone 4. It's tougher, better designed and slimmer, not to mention even with 2 cards in it it won't balloon up like Costanza's wallet.

Also, no issues with demagnetizing cards. I'm not sure where you heard that rumor but if that was the case, there would definitely be a small uproar about cases like these.

Their product may be great, but I'm not encouraging website design that immediately plays a video (with audio on). I'll get one of the alternatives, great idea though!

But is it OK to keep credit cards next to the antenna of a mobile phone? I heard that when the phone is in use or ringing the electromagnetic waves can de-magnetise the card's magnetic stripe.

That happening is just about as likely as it be demagnetized by rubbing two cards together...
There are a lot of stupid rumours about demagnetizing cards but in reality you could probably rub an average strength magnet against a card and it would still be fine.

Mythbusters did a very good episode on this, they busted just about every single one of the credit card demagnetizing myths the tried. Scratching the stripe is a much more likely way for the card to be "destroyed".

I'm a big fan of my Case Mate case, which holds my DL and a credit card. It looks like the Callet is more flexible, but also bulkier.

I've been using a case with my cards in it for several years now, and haven't lost a phone yet. But I either have my phone on me all the time, or know where it is. I agree that losing (or having it stolen) would really be inconvenient, but personally, the benefit outweighs the risk.

Finally, I haven't had a problem with the mag stripe. I'd guess that the hotel keys are reprogrammable, and therefore more prone to being wiped, but a CC is different enough.

Sweet! Now I can save time by losing both my wallet and phone the same time!

@Oshawapilot

Doesn't take a gimmicky iphone case to minimize what you carry.

I've only ever used a slim leather sheath made to just carry a card or two plus ID.

I don't live in fear of getting mugged, but still have zero interest in holding my
personal cards in my hand for the hours a day that my iphone is often out.

Regardless of whether it's theft, loss, or any number of accidents that can take
your phone out of your hand...

Losing an iphone would suck.

Losing your ID, debit card AND iphone at the same time is a world of suck.

Don't plan on either scenario happening, but am happy to minimize the risk
and keep the cards in my pocket with the addition of a mere millimeter's worth
of leather.

Deal Extreme has these. I ordered one and it is awesome and way cheaper. People are sooo jealous of me.

Also they come in multiple colors, cost $3.00 and free shipping. I win.

thanks for the tip - just ordered one - but in black - the reviews for the callet are in fact awful - poor quality and service from the company - for $3 you can't go wrong.
