Apple removes click-wheel iPod games from iTunes

Coinciding with what we've heard about Apple making a product transition in the iPod line -- namely that the iPod classic and shuffle are to be discontinued, -- AppleInsider has pointed out that click-wheel iPod games are no longer available from the iTunes store. Previously, by clicking on the App Store menu in iTunes, there was an iPod Click Wheel Games option which has now been removed.

With Apple's forthcoming media event scheduled for next Tuesday, it's likely the removal of the click-wheel games from the iTunes store is in preparation for the announcement of the discontinuation of the click-wheel model (as well as signalling the end of an era of click-wheel games dating back to the first iPod).

If you've got an iPod classic, or one of the older click-wheel generation iPods, why not give the old wheel a swan song performance over the weekend and take some of the old, classic games (Brick, Vortex, iQuiz to name a few) for a spin.

Anybody noticed how in iOS 5 Apple switched out "iPod" for "Music" and the app icons switched to the iPod touch version. I'm thinking it's because it has the original iPods silhouette on it and that's why they changed it- Because it won't even be offered anymore.

I can't believe iPods are retro now.

Cubis was always my favorite clickwheel game (and one of my favorites on Palm, way back when). Fortunately, FreshGames seem to be working on an iOS version presently, according to their Facebook page.

You'd think tHey could keep the games up for people that still have them. I think they sold quite a few classics.

A couple years ago I finally bought an iPod classic in preparation for a trip to Boston. (I forget which generation, but it had an 80 GB HD.) Sadly, not long after I bought my iPhone, my Classic disappeared on me, and while my iPhone gets the job done and is nice and convenient, there are aspects of the Classic that I miss.

If they are ending that line, with any luck Apple will be releasing the last of the stock at a discounted price. Maybe I'll pick one up for nostalgia's sake.

first ipod I owned was the 4th generation ipod photo with the first color screen. Its hard to believe that came out in 2004, and where we have come since then.
