6 million copies of Lion sold since July 20

Tim Cook announced today that Apple's OS X 10.7 Lion has sold more than 6 million copies since going on sale July 20. That's a whopping 80% more than Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Another interesting bit of information Cook threw out there about Lion is that it only took Lion 2 weeks to reach ten percent of Apple's install user base. Windows 7 took 20 weeks to reach 10% of its install base.

Wait... another source said "6 million copied DOWNLOADED". Which makes a whole lot more sense than "sold" considering that it is virtually only available as a download. And you can re-download it as many times as you want. I agree with commenter above. Most of the numbers Cook is throwing around don't make any sense without any context.

Another interesting bit of information is that Windows has a massively larger install base, meaning it take more copies sold to reach that 10%.

Let's compare the number of Windows licesenes sold in those 2 weeks that Lion sold 6 million and see how excited you're feeling then.
