Looks like the older (released Sept. 2010) , has an accelerometer as well, so i guess theres no hardware changes, if i'm wrong someone lmk !

I synched my iPod Nano last night and was notified that a software update was available. Post this not-very-big update, my Nano had the large icon options, all the new watch faces, and an updated pedometer app.

Is anyone sure that there has actually been a hardware change? I just installed the software update on my nano, and I don't yet see anything missing. In particular, the fitness function seems just like the new examples on Apple's website (but I've never used any version, so I'm not certain).

Actually, there were no new iPod hardware announced, except for the white iPod touch models. All the iPod nanos and the black iPod touch models keep the same SKU number, MCxxxLL/A, which means that they don't differ hardware-wise in any way that a consumer could tell. So it's just a software upgrade. (All new Apple products, like the white iPod touch models, have SKU numbers starting with MD.)

So if the Nike+ dongle is no longer needed doesn't that mean it has Bluetooth?

I know everyone is in an iPhone frenzy but this could be a pretty big deal. Having Bluetooth on this device would be huge.

Maybe I'm wrong. Any help anyone?

Ok so maybe I jumped the gun a bit. After some further reading it looks like it just has the sensor built in. Not the wireless tech to communicate with a Nike shoe sensor.

Unless someone finds something different this is a real bummer. Was hoping to see Bluetooth on this device so it could display incoming calls/texts. That would be so cool. Oh well maybe next fall.

No, it has both the pedometer and the Nike+ sensor built in. I'm also trying to figure out if it can do A2DP since I could wear it on a watch with bluetooth headphones while I work out at the gym or go running (that would be SWEET!). You'd think Apple would have pointed this out as it's a much called for feature.

@Tanios: According to the tech specs page on Apple's website, the iPod nano only has an accelerometer and not a pedometer or Nike+ sensor built-in. No Bluetooth either.

Best I can tell there are no wireless communications at all. Apple website clearly says "There’s no need to connect a receiver or use a shoe sensor to track your steps". Previously (6th generation aka last years nano) you needed a Nike shoe with sensor and a dongle to communicate with shoe wirelessly.

This sounds like every thing is built into the nano. So no wireless communications.

Yes...a real let down. I will just have to wait for my nano watch that tells me who's calling-displays my text messages.

Maybe I'm wrong and we have the 2nd gen iPod touch all over again.

Any way I'm an Arkansas razorback fan so used to saying..."maybe next year!"

The UI changes and clock faces should at least be downloadable.

The pedometer is not firmware-able....

Why do these upgrades require new hardware? Sounds like a firmware upgrade to me.

Don't get me wrong, I would gladly pay for it, but I have two iPod Nanos already!

Agreed. I was wondering the same thing. Obviously the accelerometer can't be added via software, but everything else seems like a simple firmware upgrade. Then again, they're artificially limiting Siri so that we have to buy the iPhone 4S...
