Refreshed iPod touch and iPod nano now available at Apple Store

The store is back up. US customers can now place orders for the updated iPod nano and iPod touch and the reduced-priced iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. Starting at $129 for the iPod nano and $199 for the iPod touch, Apple is reporting that all models of the black iPod touch and the iPod nano are in stock as of today. The white iPod touch will ship by October 12.

Those interested in the iPhone 4S can pre-order those October 7 with an expected release of October 14.

The Apple Store is getting hit pretty hard with traffic right now, and if you're encountering site errors, you'll want to try back later.

Would someone mind explaining why the iPod Touch is being described as "new" and "refreshed"? I haven't read about any differences between the old and new black model besides a small price decrease on the 8GB model.

Has Apple done nothing with this product for the past year? At the very least, they could have given consumers a bump in storage considering that flash memory prices continue to drop.

As a big Apple fan, I laughed this morning when I saw that the Zune was being terminated but now I'm rather saddened that Apple seems to be taking advantage of their lack of competition.

I think "new" refers to the white versions. For the black versions, there are no hardware differences at all. They even use the same SKUs as before (MCxxxLL/A). This reminds me of how the "8GB 3rd generation iPod Touch" actually was the same as the 2nd generation (similar in performance to the iPhone 3G), unlike the true 3rd generation iPod Touches with 32 and 64 GB (similar in performance to the iPhone 3GS). Although I'm not sure they kept the SKU back then.

The only other thing "new" or "refreshed" can refer to is iOS 5 since that's all that has changed.

I have an original iPod Touch, been wanting to upgrade for years, IF ONLY they would include a decent camera I'd be there with cash in hand.

The iPod touch looks totally unchanged in terms of hardware, apart from now coming in white as well as black. It still maxes out at 64Gb which is perhaps a surprise, as until now it has always maxed out at double the highest capacity iPhone.

Are there any hardware changes to the iPod nano, or is this all software too?

I have to go to an Apple store soon to replace my iPod suffering from the dreaded "sh***y home button" issue, would be cool if I could get a white one as a replacement.

Hmmm.
