Software update brings new features to 2010 iPod nano

Although it's not on Apple's support site yet, Macstories reports that a software update is available for the 6th generation (2010) iPod nano, updating the software to version 1.2 with the following features:

  • Easier navigation with two icon sizes
  • Fitness feature with built-in accelerometer that's easier to set for running or walking. This works out of the box or with the Nike + iPod sport kit.
  • Additional clock faces

These were all features announced for the refreshed iPod nano line at today's event. The update is available via Software Update if you own a 6th-generation nano and is expected to be available through the support site soon.

I have the lunatik watch band and it is awesome. I just installed the 1.2 update on my nano and now I found a problem. By default the clock face should appear when you wake the device from sleep. However even though the feature is turned on, the current song (although paused) appears. I've tried several things and no luck so far. This was not an issue prior to the 1.2 update.

So with this update, what difference is there between the nano I buy today versus the nano I bought last week? Basically, did they actually refresh the models? I heard discussion earlier about firmware updates (whether they were viable or not). Trying to figure out whether I need to actually buy a "new" iPod nano for workouts or if I can get away with buying the 6th gen nano

This is not suprising given that the hardware is exactly the same. The only thing that was announced was the refreshed behaviour, although they (deliberately?) left out the part that it was all implemented in software.

The nano-as-watch thing (they showed it with a strap) is pretty disingenuous. After getting wowed reactions to mine, becoming a strong advocate for it—it was my favorite among several watches, including solid gold models costing many times more—and despite having covered the connector and earphone hole with rubber plugs (available online), it developed problems with moisture getting under the glass. The nano had never been submerged; the store rep said I never should so much have used a faucet with the nano on my wrist!

Apple wouldn't cover the damage per its standard water damage policy, even though I was only doing something Apple clearly had advocated (and continues to advocate, apparently), had taken extra precautions, and which resulted from insufficient moisture sealing on the part of Apple for an application they themselves advocate.

Normally I am thrilled with the support I get from Apple (and I do get a lot of it). But not on this one. It's like the bad appetizer that could ruin an otherwise great, large meal. It requires you to keep it in context of the overall picture. As a customer it's not always easy to do that.

Bottom line: Apple really shouldn't be showing the nano with a watch strap.

While this is nice and all, Apple should really jump on the idea of a solar charged iPod Shuffle.

I'm surprised Apple themselves didn't come out with their own version of a watch strap. They did it with the iPhone bumper and iPad magnetic flap/case. Why not the nano, especially when people seem really into it as a watch?

Apple isn't forcing its consumers to buy the newest Nano in order to upgrade? SHOCKING!

I'm still awaiting the time I can:
a) use my nano watch as a screen to view and acknowledge notifications from my iphone and ipad
b) use bluetooth headphones
