NYT: Siri-powered Apple HDTV is definitely coming
Over at the New York Times' Bits blog, Nick Bilton has added his well-sourced voice to the rising chorus of yea-sayers on the rumor of an Apple-branded television set, arriving at some date yet uncertain. Bilton's reporting, stretching back over a year, leads him to believe that while Apple isn't yet manufacturing televisions, the company is within striking distance; it could announce a product by the end of next year and begin shipping in 2013. "It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when," Bilton says.
While rumors of an AppleTV-with-a-TV product have been percolating for years (Bilton pegs 2007 as the start of internal awareness at Apple that such a thing would someday happen), the recent resurgence of the concept is driven in part by a quote in Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs. The late CEO reportedly said "I finally cracked it" regarding the secret formula for simplifying and enhancing the TV interface.
Bilton believes that Siri's intelligent assistant is the key for controlling a TV, giving the program guide a massive shot of search savvy and friendliness. Apple's put some serious talent behind the project, according to Bloomberg BusinessWeek; they report Apple's lead engineer on the TV project is Jeff Robbin, who joined the company in 2000 as one of the original designers of SoundJam MP at Casady & Greene; that app eventually led to iTunes.
An Apple TV would presumably tackle the wide variance in TV sizes and capabilities with a MacBook Pro/iPhone approach of 'fewer choices, less confusion,' but it's less clear how the company would meet its own expectations for profitability in a challenging market. Getting content and collaborating with other TV providers could be a sticking point, especially without the legendary negotiating skills of Steve Jobs, and Apple hasn't exactly set the world on fire with its existing iOS-based TV product. We'll have to wait and see.

I'm sure Apple will do this as I discussed in my blog recently http://universal-machine.blogspot.com/2011/10/will-apple-own-your-living-room.html Siri is the key to the worlds best TV remote control
October 28 2011 at 7:48 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMy concept of an Apple TV. A very nice display with the current Apple TV built in, SIRI and the ability of SIRI to control a cable/satellite box - connection and maybe a Blu-Ray player. That way one gets the app store, a killer display and bypasses the hassle of getting content providers (satellite and cable) to cooperate. An Apple TV type of remote and SIRI would be the killer combo. Maybe watch a show on TV, call up your photos that relate to a show or even have a picture in picture ability with an app and a TV show. This is something I could see and want.

I'd bet that Apple is talking with cable companies to REPLACE their set-top boxes with something that finally pushes them to IPTV. Watch a show through your cable subscription once, at your own pace/schedule, with advertisements, and at the end of the show, you see this: Get the Season Pass for this series on iTunes
It incentivizes Apple to do such a thing and, in theory, increases revenue for the content creators and cable companies. Free internet solutions are what they are because of the convenience that they offer. Having that same convenience from the set-top box your cable subscription pipes into that includes a paid ad-free subscription and purchase model is something that could REALLY work.
If this is an Apple TV device, and not a TV set, with Siri (integrated with Netflix), I'll buy it on day one. Hulu Plus would be even better.
I'm rather fond of my Apple TV now, but Siri would make it that much better... as long as it isn't "always listening," the way Kinect is. I use my Xbox for Hulu Plus now, and it's not uncommon for it to pause, rewind, or fast-forward because something on the show triggered the voice control. A remote with a Siri button would be nice.
A lot of people might get this Apple television with Siri and then want to get iPod touches/iPhones/or iPads to use them further too, for AirPlay , tossing files from camera roll, etc, HUGE possible halo effect...

1) Apple TV is so-so. Its saving grace is its price but the feature set isn't unique and the interface isn't terribly special. That said, it does fit neatly into the cloud space and should be pursued.
2) The #1 reason Apple TV hasn't been more of a success is due to the fact that its features are not integrated into hardware with a large screen and speakers which can be purchased off the same Best Buy shelves as every other TV.
Apple doesn't really have to change anything about the current feature set of "Apple TV" to make an "Apple HDTV" work. It would already fit neatly into their cloud space. But adding one or two "killer app" features could certainly give it iphone/ipad-like success.
A full iOS Apple HDTV with Siri integration and DVR would certainly be a compelling device. And everyone with an iPhone or iPad would already have a gaming controller. However, more likely is Apple's own kinect-style technology. No doubt they've spent more time thinking about it than me though.
I already have a very nice 52 inch TV. It doesn't need to be replaced. If Apple wants me to buy this insanely great upgrade to TV watching, they will ship a set top box.
October 27 2011 at 10:16 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAn integrated AppleTV might have a camera or two for gesture recognition, gaming, and FaceTime calls, plus the ability to control all functions of the TV, DVR, and media purchasing.
Apple might partner with one or more of the major cable or satellite providers to allow access to their programming via CableCARD or DCAS, and then bring the others on as standards emerge.
I have no idea what the future holds, but I'm imagining a television with only two wires connected (power and signal) or only one for power with the signal being WiFi. Control is done from an iOS device or using a combination of gesture and voice. Media shopping and program guides could be on the iOS device or the big screen (and moved from one to the other with a flick or a spoken command). In the absence of the iOS device, the TV's cameras could recognize gestures and its microphone could pick up spoken commands.
Then there are the apps...
I know most of what I've described is available piecemeal, but I think Apple has the potential to really make it "just work", and turn the TV into an appliance that's super-advanced, but doesn't require you to leave instructions for the baby-sitter explaining how to watch a movie using the three remotes.
