Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me find a cognitive behavioral therapy app

Dear Aunt TUAW,

I'm the dad of a high-needs child. We're doing cognitive behavioral therapy with him. Is there an app you can recommend that will help me track day-to-day progress on specific goals, and help my boy work towards rewards?

I'm looking for an app that can show progress over time and that can work with multiple goals. One that's geared towards CBT would be ideal.

Thanks in advance!

Your loving nephew,

Dave P.

Dear Dave,

We reviewed CBT Referee ($4.99) a couple of years ago here on TUAW. It's not exactly the kind of progress app that you're talking about, more about evaluating one's thought process, so we kept on looking further.

Auntie and the TUAW crew searched the App Store but failed to find any other app we could strongly recommend. We took a brief look at "Gold Stars" ($0.99) but found it too flaky to use. It seems to have a lot of the right ideas, but kept crashing as we tested it out. It probably hasn't been updated recently.

So Auntie decided to turn over the search to her TUAW braintrust of nieces and nephews. Do you have any apps to recommend for Dave? One that helps do daily progress tracking, with user-defined goals?

Hugs and thanks,

Auntie T.

Dear Aunt TUAW,

As a Photographer I have an extensive photo, video, music and film collection spread over a few HDDs. Since I am excluding render files etc from the Time Machine, I get by just yet, but I'm getting close to 60 gig available on my Time Machine drive

Counting that my photography collection is getting bigger with around 50 gig a month, not counting other projects, you can see I am running out of place, fast.

I love the Time Machine protocol, and the integrated system in my drives. (incremental, set-up once, never think about it again 'till you need it)

The big problem is: the only affordable HDD's I can find in shops are 2TB (and I'm not ready to spend 500 euro or more on a bigger drive).

Is there a way to use separate drives for 1 Time Machine?

Love and Thanks,

Your nephew-twice-removed Kris

I work with at risk you in chicago, and i'm familiar with CBT practices. I would seriously consider using project management software for this task. It will have all the bells and whistles you need for each phase of your child's treatment and it will allow you to assign resources to said tasks.

Worst case, I would look at your child's treatment plan or IEP and use those as topics for a spreadsheet.

As you are doing this, i would work with your child's therapist to make sure everyone is track goals and progress the same way. Best of luck to you and your child.

A great app for tracking behavior and data collection is BehaviorTrackerPro. You can track multiple behaviors when using the interval mode.

Check out the website http://www.snapps4kids.com/ to find tons of other apps that have been reviewed by Speech and Occupational therapists. I'm sure that many of these would be beneficial to your child.

Hope this helps :)

I honestly don't know what the odds of a question like this getting posted today but I *just* submitted my therapy app to the store yesterday. It's not CBT, but DBT, a more recent iteration of CBT. Some would say that it's a better CBT but that's just my biased opinion.

Anyway, my app is not out yet - it should be within a few days if all goes well - but you might want to give it a look. It's extremely customizable so you might be able to make it work for your needs and you might learn a thing or two from the skills and coaching it's got built into it. The app's site is www.diarycard.net

I'm always looking for feedback, so anything you can share would be much appreciated. Good luck in the search. I think that quality therapy apps are nonexistent on the app store which is why I spent hundreds of hours and lots of money developing mine. I think it's worth it.

I am a veteran that is effected by PTSD and a traumatic brain injury (TBI). There are some PTSD coping apps that have support for TBI that involves cognitive therapy. I would imagine that Luminosity would be able to help his little boy. I don't have access to the App store right now. I'm sure there is something that can help this little guy and his dad.

Tough one - havent seen much that combines CBT with goal setting. Some websites that encourage "personal development" have accompanying smart phone capabilities e.g., http://www.mindbloom.com/about/ and http://lifetick.com/. Haven't seen as yet a CBT app that I think really cuts it.

I'm a big fan of mindbloom (and the accompanying Bloom* app) myself.

Dear Aunt TUAW,

I have always had a problem talking on my iPhone while getting texts or emails. The sound and vibrate can be pretty annoying when you are hold the phone up to your ear. I was hoping that the Notification Center would address this problem, and silently let you know you have a text message. This is not the case. Is there any way I can have my notifications muted when I am on a phone call, and have the sound resume when I hang up?
Thanks!

Ryan

I helped develop an app designed by a psychologist for addiction recovery. Based on your requirements, I think the app could be modified with new rules to track goals and progress as you described. However, since I'm not a doctor or therapist, I would need detailed information about how to structure the data.

I am an addiction recovery coach. I would be interested in the app you helped develop. Can you tell me more about it? e.g., a name for the app? lepc@comcast.net

I have recently started CBT and something like this would be a real help. If something doesn't exist I don't see why we can't work together, share some ideas and make one? I think it's great your getting involved with your son at this time he needs your support. lukedxb [at] gmail [dot] com
