Apple releases "Share the Fun" iPod touch ad

Apple released a new commercial that debuted right before the Thanksgiving holiday break. The ad showcases the iPod touch and all the fun you can have when you share photos, messages and more with your iPod-owning friends. It's obviously targeting younger people who don't have an iPhone and prefer the iPod touch because it doesn't come with a monthly cellular bill. This ad is a timely reminder of the capabilities of the iPod touch. iPod touch sales are declining, and the device could use a holiday shopping boost.

November 28 2011 at 1:04 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think iPod Touch sales are declining because Apple has done little to distinguish the product from the iPhone/iPad. A leap in memory would help (128 GB being the top-end while a $199 32 GB is the low end), but what they really need are two things:
- Near Field Communication (for ad-hoc networks where WiFi may not be available - OR just make setting up ad-hoc WiFi communication between devices as simple as a button or two - "Connect to Nearby iOS Devices").
- A "Killer" feature not available on iPhone or iPad - For the lazy, this might be making the iPod Touch available in multiple colors, but to really do it right the iPod touch should be able to do something that the other devices can't, OR can do so much BETTER than the other devices - something music related would seem appropriate. One of the biggest disappointments about the iPod touch is that the "iPod" app is no more special than on the iPhone or iPad.
The only other thing I can see is to do away with the iPod Touch and instead make a smaller iPad (maybe 5"). I can actually see Apple doing away with iPhone/iPod/iPad product lines and making an iOS product line: iOS Phone and iOS Tablet (9", 6", 3.5" [a.k.a. iPod Touch). Other iPod devices would retain their iPod status.
