Megaphone, a big honkin' amplifier for your iPhone

There are a lot of powered amplifier docks for the iPhone and iPod touch, and sadly most of them are lacking in beauty and originality. Italian design firm en&is is bucking the trend with a unique unpowered amplifier that is a large, swooping ceramic horn.
The Megaphone ranges from €399 for the black and white models to €599 for the gold version. A hand-crafted wood stand holds the Megaphone in an upright position, and a user just needs to set an iPhone into the dock at the top to hear tunes blasting out of the bottom.
It's a beautiful take on a passive amplifier and would make a nice holiday gift. Check out the video below for details.

December 03 2011 at 5:51 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyPeople who say this don't know a **** about instruments, HiFi or anything that has to do with music! Music, or sound is just air that is vibrating in a certain frequency. So to generate sound you need a device that can set air in a vibrating motion. To generate louder sound you need a device that can generate even more air in an even more vibrating motion. This can be done in multiple ways. You can say about a guitar that its just a wooden box with snares. You can say about a sax that it's just a metal cone with holes in it. Or you can say about a speaker that it's just a plastic cone with an electric magnet placed in a wooden box. Fact is that in order to produce good sound big amplifiers or lots of electronics aren't really that important. Most High End music systems don't require large amplifiers at all! Most of the price you pay for those systems is in the research about what products to use and what form to put it in in what dimensions in order to produce the most accurate vibrations. They only way to judge those systems is to hear it in real life! Same goes here!

December 03 2011 at 4:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo, I guess that's about $535 to $803? Now, if I only knew what my iPhone plus case weighed in stones...
December 03 2011 at 3:20 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply.027 stone, roughly.
The Euro is at least a currency used by a significant portion of the world, and is the "native" currency where this is being sold. Stones were legal measurement in Britain until the mid-80s, and are still used conversationally for human weight.
You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar! Yet, the "native" currency, combined with an arbitrary unit of weight measurement, both give me half-useful information.
I'd bet the U.S. dollar (and imperial weights) are "native" to most of the readers of this blog.
"...would make a nice holiday gift." For $800 I could get a LOT of nice holiday gifts for someone!
