Behringer iNuke Boom: The $30K 10,000-Watt iPhone dock you know you want

You're a high-end audio equipment manufacturer, and you want to finally make a splash in the iPod touch/iPhone world. So what do you do to get the attention of customers who are bored with traditional iPhone docks? You create a huge 4-foot tall by 8-foot wide, 10,000-Watt iPhone/iPad dock called the iNuke Boom. Then you sell it for US$29,999.99.

Behringer has been making pro audio equipment for 20 years, ever since founder Uli Behringer started the company on his kitchen table. The company has decided to enter the consumer audio market with 50 new products under the Eurosound brand, and to celebrate they're going to show off the huge iPhone/iPad dock at CES 2012.

In case you're thinking about putting one of these in your house, note that you'll probably need special electrical wiring and a floor that will support a 700 pound speaker. You may also want to clear this with your neighbors before you decide to turn the volume to 11 and hit the shuffle button on the Music app.

There's no word in the press release about whether Behringer will provide free shipping for the iNuke Boom or not, or if the monstrous dock will be available on Amazon.com in time for Christmas.

I wasn't surprised that Gizmodo posted something similar without putting the insanely-hyperbolic 10,000 watts in quotation marks, but I expected better from you folks.

Clue: a standard U.S. power outlet can supply 120 volts x 15 amps = 1,800 watts. That would be *input* power to the amp, so the output would necessarily be lower, even with a very efficient switching design. If this thing (to use the most polite word I can think of) were really capable of supplying anything even remotely resembling 10kW, you would indeed need "special electrical wiring". A very high-end, five-unit induction cooktop with all units running simultaneously at maximum power might use (again, *input* power) around 10kW, and this thing would require significantly more than that.

It's not surprising that the company's name is so similar to that of one that produces cheap boxed wine.

Having purchased a fair amount of Behringer gear over the past decade, I'd say that it's not so much "high end" as "best value"—often of phenomenal value. For reference, check a Musician's Friend catalog. Call it very good stuff, if not exceptional, the sort of thing of which I personally buy loads. You'd typically have to pay 80% more to get 5% higher quality. Of course, many are willing. To me, it's foolish to spend more when most people can't tell the difference. The other important thing is that, with the possible exception of Behringer's bottom-shelf products, it's solid and reliable, often more so than alternatives of purportedly higher quality.

And, because it's Behringer, it will break after eight months.

I want one of these, and I want my iPod to be lowered from the ceiling and into its dock like Tiny Stonehenge.

Re: "...no word in the press release about whether Behringer will provide free shipping for the iNuke Boom ..."

Maybe they'll send technicians to build it on-site. Might be hard to get in your front door.

Ask them for a review unit! :-)

Wait, what day is it? April 1st?
Also, Behringer make Pro Audio and studio equipment, but they are not considered high-end, more like high-value workhorse stuff.

The fact that they are making this for publicity goes a long way to show that they have no good ideas that can generate publicity on their own.

How ridiculous.
