DODOcase wins TUAW Best of 2011 award for iPad cases

It's official! DODOcase, the San Francisco-based company that started the entire "iPad case that looks like a book" craze shortly after the release of the first iPad, was voted the best iPad case of 2011 by TUAW readers. Almost half of the readers voting (49.4 percent) chose the DODOcase (US$59.95) from a ballot of five excellent iPad cases.

DODOcase took a faltering book bindery and turned it into a successful business, cranking out handmade iPad cases that look and feel like hardbound books, with a bamboo wood tray that snugly holds the tablet in place. It's been a favorite of TUAW bloggers and readers alike since April of 2010.

The runners-up in this category were the Portenzo cases and ZAGGfolio Keyboard Case, which nearly split the remaining votes.

Congratulations to the DODOcase team, and thanks to all of the enthusiastic TUAW readers who nominated and voted for their favorites in the popular category.

Hi everyone, just to follow up on the above comments (we work closely with the team at DODOcase to supply their cases in the UK and Ireland), we have found the number of incidents where the bamboo splits are very low (less then 1% across our customers) and in those cases we have replaced the customers case. If you have any trouble with the corner pads, please do contact the retailer your purchased the case from as these can be replaced at no charge if they go get worn.

Thanks to everyone who voted for DODOcase, and feel free to give us a shout if you have any questions at all.

ugh. This case was a waste of my money. Wood split, pads (and replacement pads) refused to stay in place.

I owned a DODO and found it to be a horrible case. The wood is prone to warping, the retention grips lose their grip after just a few months, and most damnable of all: It doesn't double as a stand. It's really annoying when you want to watch a movie and have to find another way to prop up your ipad because the case you bought doesn't do it.

I bought a JOBY case, and it's been a joy. It has a flip cover, and can be used as a stand in BOTH horizontal and vertical orientations. Price is the same if I remember correctly.

This case is awful, cost my company a iPad when one of our employees dropped it and the screen shattered from the had corners of the case and lack of retention of the rubber pads

My iPad slid out of my DODO case one day and across the counter at work, stopping just over the edge on the other side of the counter.

Turns out the case had warped overnight (it's made of wood) and the retention tabs had worn out after only 2 months of use. I tossed the case and bought a better one.

The first case I ever bought was the DODOcase for the original iPad. I thought it was so cool. Until the corner pads wore down and the iPad kept falling out of the case! Bad choice.

To all the people that have negative comments about the DODOcase, you have to keep in mind how many cases are actually sold! Of course some cases are going to have issues, as with all products, but that is such a small percentage to the number of cases sold that look and work great! People always talk about the bad, and think this is the case for everyone.

I think the TUAW team needs to take a closer look at the Twelve South BookBook. While the DODOcase and the BookBook are similar in concept, the BookBook has a superior execution.

I've owned both, and while the BookBook IS better than the DODO, it suffers from other annoying issues. The zipper being one (zip, zip, zip, zip, yeah, got annoying fast), and the horrible method they decided to use to retain the case in a propped stand up position (a problem both cases share).

Still can't believe this with all the negative reviews the DODO case has gotten since it came out, including mine. The design looks cool, but it's seriously flawed. It doesn't hold the iPad in the case and it won't stand up on it's own.
