Weather Tab Pro brings graphical weather to your menu bar
There is no shortage of weather apps for iOS. On the Mac side, things are a bit more sparse, so I welcomed the arrival of Weather Tab Pro, a US$2.99 app for OS X.
The app lets you create a list of cities, and then you can scroll an animated graphic between them. You'll get local time for each city, temperature, humidity, winds and an extended forecast. Weather Tab Pro also lets you choose from among nine skins for the weather display. It sources weather information from World Weather Online, and the developer told me he hopes to add at least one additional provider.
There are a few rough edges to this app. Initially I could not find it in my application folder. Turns out it has a different name. It's called SuperWeather. That's going to confuse some people. The developer says the error was caused by a last-minute name change, and will be fixed in the next version. You also have to set it to run at startup on your own. There is no option in the app preferences to handle this.
The animations are attractive enough, but there's no Retina display support yet, though it's coming. Since the app uses a fair amount of real estate when it is activated, I'd like to see more info, like sunset/sunrise times and even an option for local radar.
If you want a free menu bar app, I'd suggest Meteorologist, which does provide a lot of information, including radar. I've been using it for years and it has kept up to date as OS X has evolved.
Weather Tab Pro shows a lot of promise and is visually attractive, and I'll be interested to see how it grows. The app requires OS X 10.7 or later and a 64-bit processor.
