Updated Perian QuickTime Plug-in: Essential for All Mac Users

Recently, Perian, the popular QuickTime plug-in for Mac, received an update. For those unfamiliar, Perian enables Mac users to play a wide array of video formats directly in QuickTime Player.

Supported formats include AVI, DIVX, FLV, MKV, GVI, VP6, and VFW, among others.

The latest version, 1.2.2, introduces support for WebM/VP8, compressed MKV files, and the FFv1 lossless video codec. To install Perian 1.2.2, users will need Mac OS X 10.4.7 or newer.

However, it’s important to note that this will be the final update available for PowerPC Macs or any Mac operating on Mac OS X 10.5 or earlier. Future updates will only be compatible with Intel Macs running Mac OS X 10.6 or later.
