iPhone-Compatible Pulse Oximeter: Features and Benefits

The collaboration between the Electrical and Computer Engineering in Medicine (ECEM) research group and the Pediatric Anesthesia Research Team at the University of British Columbia has led to the creation of an innovative pulse oximeter that is compatible with the iPhone and other smartphones. This device is designed for home use by individuals suffering from respiratory conditions, enabling them to monitor their pulse and blood oxygen levels.

The device records the data and transmits it online to medical facilities or doctors’ offices.

It has been tested in clinical settings at Vancouver General Hospital and in field conditions in Uganda. Watch a quirky video demonstration of the pulse oximeter below.

Pulse oximeters are essential in managing emergencies, trauma, and chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD or emphysema by non-invasively measuring blood oxygen saturation.

Affordable consumer versions of these devices are available for less than $50.
