ECBC B8 Sparrow Review: Ultimate Business Travel Bag

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing numerous cases and bags, yet this is the first occasion I’ve had to explore a piece of luggage designed with electronic devices in mind. ECBC has recently launched their B8 Luggage series, which includes the Sparrow Wheeled Garment Bag priced at US$399.99. Before you think you’ve stumbled upon “Luggage Daily” instead of TUAW, let me assure you, this might just be the most tech-friendly suitcase you’ll encounter. Plus, there’s a chance for a TUAW reader to win this bag, so keep reading.

Let’s dive into the details of the Sparrow’s tech capabilities, which are likely to intrigue most TUAW readers.

It features a TSA-friendly front compartment that ECBC dubs Fastpass, equipped with a foam padded section that comfortably fits any laptop up to 15 inches. This means it can accommodate the entire current MacBook lineup without issue. The compartment includes adjustable inserts to secure devices as small as the 11″ MacBook Air.

And for those who can’t travel without their iPad, the Sparrow includes a specially designed padded pocket. If you’re carrying an iPad mini, you can adjust the modular inserts for a snug fit.

The bag also comes with a 4,500 mAh rechargeable battery, perfect for an emergency iPhone charge, though you’ll need to bring your own iPhone charging cable. A USB to micro-USB cable is included for recharging the battery pack.

Additionally, there are two smaller pockets in the Fastpass compartment for storing your iPhone or another device, along with a cable or charging adapter.

Moving to the rear, the Sparrow offers a dedicated garment section ideal for storing a suit or jacket for short trips, designed to minimize wrinkles. This area also includes two zippered pockets for smaller items like socks and underwear.

The main compartment is designed for the rest of your clothing, equipped with compression straps to maximize space and minimize movement during transit.

As a rollerbag intended for carry-on use, it features a retractable handle that can be concealed within a zippered compartment when not needed. The wheels, although initially stiff, are expected to loosen with use.

Additional features include a zip-out water bottle holder, a retractable ID holder, dual padded handles for easy overhead storage, and a front pocket for magazines located on the electronics compartment.

The entire design is compact, measuring 22″ x 14″ x 9″ and weighing only 9 lbs.
