Skype Discontinues Support for OS X 10.5 and Older Versions

The gradual phase-out of support for older operating systems by software companies is an ongoing issue, and Mac users with older versions of OS X are the latest to feel the impact. Specifically, those using OS X 10.5 Leopard or earlier have found themselves unable to access Skype recently.

Disgruntled users have taken to Skype’s message board to express their frustrations after being unexpectedly signed out of their accounts.

Skype Discontinues Support for OS X 10.5 and Older Versions

This issue has affected not only those on OS X 10.5 but also some on the slightly newer OS X 10.7.5 Lion.

In response to the outcry, Skype officially stated that they no longer support versions of OS X below 10.6.

However, there is some good news for users on OS X versions 10.6 through 10.8. Skype has made available version 6.15 of their software, which is fully functional and supports all major features such as group video calls, group chats, and screen sharing.

Users can download this version from the official Skype website to ensure compatibility.

Rene from Skype clarified in a forum post that there is no intention to lock out users on these intermediate versions of OS X. He encouraged users to stay current with their software updates to enjoy the best possible experience and avoid any service interruptions.

For those on OS X 10.9 or the developer preview of 10.10, Skype version 6.19 is recommended.

While many Mac users may not be affected by this change, those relying on older hardware without the option to upgrade their operating system could find themselves at a disadvantage.
