Petition Urges Apple to Update AirPort Routers After Security Flaw

Apple fans have launched a petition asking the company to update its discontinued AirPort routers. The move comes after a major security flaw, known as AirBorne, put millions of devices at risk—including Apple’s AirPort Express, Extreme, and Time Capsule models.

Gary Longsine, an IT expert and Apple user, started the petition. He argues that many people still rely on these routers because they are fast, simple to use, and very reliable.

Security Threat Sparks Concern

The AirBorne vulnerability allows hackers to exploit devices without any user action. Although the original report didn’t mention AirPort routers, experts believe they share the same risks. These routers have not received updates since 2019.

Longsine believes that without a fix, users are left with two bad options: stop using their working routers or stay exposed to online attacks.

Why People Still Use AirPort Routers

Despite their age, AirPort routers still offer unique features. The AirPort Express supports AirPlay audio bridging—something newer Apple devices don’t provide. AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule also deliver high internet speeds and simple backup tools.

Many users don’t want to throw away these devices. They work well and fit neatly into Apple’s ecosystem. That’s why the petition calls on Apple to bring them up to date, even with a simple security patch.

Will Apple Take Action?

The petition has already gained dozens of signatures and targets Apple leadership directly. Supporters hope Apple will release an update just as it has done for older products in the past.

Apple has not responded yet. However, the growing concern around AirBorne may force the company to reconsider its position. Users say these routers are still valuable—and leaving them vulnerable simply isn’t right.
