Mac users will soon command ancient armies again when Total War: Rome II relaunches on May 29. The fan-favorite strategy game now runs natively on Apple Silicon and modern Intel Macs. Players who already own the game on Steam or the Mac App Store will receive the update at no extra cost.
Originally launched in 2013 for Windows and in 2014 for macOS, the game quickly drew attention for its mix of turn-based empire management and real-time combat. Early reviews noted bugs and performance issues, but Feral Interactive released updates and the Emperor Edition in 2014 to address those concerns. The result was a more stable and enjoyable experience.

A New Life on Modern Macs
The new version replaces the outdated 32-bit build, which lost compatibility when macOS Catalina dropped support for 32-bit apps. Feral Interactive modernized the game specifically for Apple’s newer chipsets, allowing smoother performance and longer-term support.
Players can choose from 28 historical factions and build their empires through diplomacy, trade, and war. The game’s real-time battles add depth, requiring strategy based on terrain, troop morale, and unit strengths—not just numbers.
New Expansions Join the Return
The relaunch includes ten downloadable content (DLC) packs. Five offer new campaigns, including Empire Divided and Rise of the Republic. The other five introduce culture packs such as Desert Kingdoms. These additions expand the game’s depth, providing new factions, stories, and challenges.
Feral hasn’t confirmed new pricing yet, but the original version sold for $59.99. The company will share updated prices on Steam and the Mac App Store closer to launch.
Total War: Rome II’s return marks more than a relaunch—it shows growing support for Mac gaming. With native Apple Silicon support and expanded content, the title invites a new generation of players to lead, conquer, and rewrite history.
