PayPal has launched its Tap to Pay contactless feature for iPhone users in Germany. This follows Apple’s move to open its NFC chip to third-party developers, as required by the EU’s Digital Markets Act.

Until now, only Apple Pay could access the NFC chip for contactless payments. With this update, iPhone users can now use PayPal to pay in stores directly through their device.

How the Feature Works

The new Tap to Pay option supports any card terminal that accepts Mastercard. Users simply hold their iPhone near the payment terminal to complete a purchase.

Currently, the feature is available to a limited group of users. PayPal plans to expand it across Germany in the coming weeks.

It’s important to note that the feature does not work with Apple Watch yet. Apple has not allowed NFC access on its wearables for third-party apps.

New Features Coming Soon

PayPal is also preparing more features for German users. One upcoming option, “Ratenzahlung To Go,” will let customers split in-store payments into installments. They can choose to pay over 3, 6, 12, or 24 months.

In addition, PayPal will launch a cashback program to reward users on purchases. These updates aim to increase flexibility and value for shoppers.

Joerg Kablitz, Managing Director for PayPal in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, called it their “biggest investment in product development” for the region.

A Global Trend Toward Openness

While the EU required Apple to share its NFC chip, Apple has also started doing so in the U.S. voluntarily. This signals broader global changes.

As PayPal’s Tap to Pay rolls out successfully in Germany, more countries could follow—paving the way for a more open mobile payment experience worldwide.
