Renowned Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda has teamed up with Apple to create Last Scene, a moving sci-fi short shot entirely on the iPhone 16 Pro. The 27-minute film, released on May 15, 2025, tells the story of an aspiring screenwriter who meets his granddaughter from 50 years in the future.
Apple’s “Shot on iPhone” series has previously featured other acclaimed directors, but Last Scene adds a deeply emotional and narrative-rich addition to the collection.

A Story That Blends Time Travel and Emotion
In Last Scene, the main character Kurata is approached by a mysterious girl named Yui. She claims to be his granddaughter and explains, “It’s a time machine kinda thing.” The pair embark on a mission to save not just television drama, but also a cherished Ferris wheel in their town.
Kore-eda’s signature storytelling style brings warmth, humanity, and subtle tension to the film. Viewers are drawn into a tale that explores legacy, memory, and the impact of creative passion.
iPhone 16 Pro Showcases Cinematic Power
Shot entirely using the iPhone 16 Pro, the film highlights the device’s professional-grade camera system. From low-light sequences to smooth transitions and detailed close-ups, the footage reveals just how far smartphone cinematography has come.
Apple also released a behind-the-scenes video showing how the cast and crew used iPhone tools during production. It includes interviews with Kore-eda and team members, offering insights into how the device supported traditional filmmaking techniques.
Continuing Apple’s Creative Tradition
Apple has collaborated with global directors in the past, including Damien Chazelle, Park Chan-wook, and Vishal Bhardwaj. Their projects, also filmed on iPhones, helped showcase the creative potential of mobile devices.
Last Scene stands out as one of the most personal and touching pieces in the series. It reminds viewers that great stories, when paired with the right tools, can come to life—no matter the device.
