Apple appears ready to release the second generation of its popular item tracker, AirTag, with a launch expected alongside the iPhone 17 in fall 2025. The updated AirTag 2 will keep its familiar design but pack in several new features focused on range, safety, and usability.
Precision Tracking Gets a Major Upgrade
The biggest change to AirTag 2 is an improved Precision Finding range. The current model offers directional tracking within 15 meters. However, AirTag 2 is expected to stretch that distance to about 60 meters, thanks to a new Ultra Wideband chip. This upgrade will give users more accurate directions to their lost items, even from farther away.

This increased range may come at a cost. Some experts believe the added features could drain battery life faster, but Apple aims to balance this with smarter alerts.
Smarter Battery Warnings and Anti-Stalking
Apple plans to introduce improved battery alerts. Instead of a single low-battery warning, AirTag 2 could provide multiple spaced-out notifications, helping users better prepare for replacements. This feature aims to address complaints after Apple removed the battery icon from the Find My app in 2022.
AirTag 2 will also tackle safety concerns. Reports suggest Apple is making it harder for stalkers to disable the speaker, a tactic used to silence alerts. These anti-tampering changes build on Apple’s cross-platform tracker standard, released earlier in 2025 in partnership with Google.
No Big Changes to Design—Yet
Despite the feature improvements, AirTag 2 is expected to keep the same shape and size as the original. That means existing accessories like keychains and holders will still fit. While some fans hope for a rechargeable battery, this change remains unlikely due to the AirTag’s small size and lack of a viable charging solution.
