Apple TV+ is preparing for a bigger role in live sports. After the strong debut of its new movie “F1” starring Brad Pitt, Apple is now looking to secure U.S. broadcast rights for Formula 1. The current deal with ESPN ends in 2026.

According to the Financial Times, Apple is already in early talks. The goal is to expand its sports coverage and attract a wider audience to its streaming service.

ESPN Could Lose Its Racing Crown

ESPN currently holds the U.S. rights to F1. That deal runs until 2026. The network missed a chance to renew in 2024, which gives Apple a chance to enter the race.

Formula 1 has grown in popularity in recent years. Since Liberty Media bought the series in 2017, U.S. viewership has doubled. Around 1.1 million people now watch races on ESPN.

Netflix’s “Drive to Survive” and Apple’s “F1” film have helped fuel this growth. Experts estimate the next U.S. broadcast deal could be worth up to $121 million.

Apple Pushes for More Control

If Apple wins the rights, it could change how fans watch Formula 1. The company is also aiming to take full control of movie distribution. It may end future partnerships with studios like Warner Bros., which helped release the “F1” movie.

Apple has not yet commented on the talks. Neither have Liberty Media or the FIA. But many believe Apple is serious about building a major sports platform.

With interest in F1 rising, Apple’s timing may be perfect. The company seems ready to shift gears and take the lead in sports streaming.
