Apple has officially approved BOE Technology to supply OLED display panels for the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro—but only for units sold in China. This marks the first time BOE has been selected to provide panels for Apple’s premium Pro model, following years of supplying displays for lower-tier iPhones.

The news was shared by display analyst Jukan Choi on social media, and reflects a significant step forward for BOE’s manufacturing quality and Apple’s trust in its capabilities.

Strategic Move for Both Companies

For Apple, the approval is part of a broader strategy to diversify its supply chain and reduce reliance on South Korean giants Samsung and LG. Localizing some production in China also helps Apple align with government expectations and reduce risks from international trade tensions.

China is one of Apple’s largest markets. Partnering with BOE, the country’s top OLED manufacturer, could help Apple strengthen local relationships and streamline distribution.

BOE’s Road to Redemption

BOE’s relationship with Apple hasn’t always been smooth. In 2022, Apple removed BOE from its iPhone 13 supply chain after discovering unauthorized changes in its display components. Since then, BOE has improved its processes and worked to regain Apple’s confidence.

Approval for the iPhone 17 Pro reflects those improvements. BOE is also expected to secure full display module production approval by the end of July.

Competitive Pressures and the Future

Samsung and LG remain dominant in OLED supply, especially for high-end iPhones with ProMotion displays. But BOE’s entry into the Pro-level supply chain creates more pricing pressure and flexibility for Apple.

For now, BOE’s panels are limited to China-bound models. However, success with the iPhone 17 Pro could open the door to future global contracts. Apple is expected to begin large-scale production later this summer to meet its usual September launch.

As Apple ramps up, all eyes will be on how BOE handles this high-stakes opportunity.
