Apple’s Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams will retire by the end of 2025, prompting a major reshuffle of executive duties. Williams played a key role in managing design, health, and global operations. His departure creates an opportunity for other leaders to step up and take charge of critical divisions.
Tim Cook to Oversee Design Teams
CEO Tim Cook will directly oversee Apple’s design departments following Williams’ exit. Cook previously led these teams from 2015 to 2017. While Cook takes overall responsibility, Vice Presidents Alan Dye and Molly Anderson will continue leading day-to-day design operations in their respective areas — Human Interface and Industrial Design.

Craig Federighi Expands His Role
Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, will now manage the watchOS software and the health software group led by Evan Doll. He will also supervise health product development under Dr. Sumbul Desai. These teams contribute heavily to the Apple Watch and other wellness initiatives.
Sabih Khan to Succeed in Operations
Current SVP of Operations Sabih Khan will take over many of Williams’ operational duties. He will lead the AppleCare team and share oversight of the Greater China region with Tim Cook. Apple relies on this market for both production and growth, making this a crucial leadership area.
Fitness+ to Join Apple Services
Apple plans to integrate its Fitness+ subscription into the Services division, which includes Apple Music, iCloud, and Apple TV+. SVP Eddy Cue, who heads this group, will take on Fitness+ and expand Apple’s growing digital services portfolio.
John Ternus: A Possible Successor?
Williams’ retirement has reignited speculation about Tim Cook’s future replacement. Many analysts see John Ternus, SVP of Hardware Engineering, as the frontrunner. Since 2022, Ternus has managed the Apple Watch, positioning him as a strong internal candidate for the top role.
