Apple’s Miami Billboard Sparks Controversy

A new Apple ad in Miami is getting more attention than expected—and not for its photography skills. Part of the ongoing “Shot on iPhone, Drawn on iPad” campaign, the billboard has sparked online chatter for resembling something a little too risqué when viewed from a distance.

The billboard features a photo of a shark with an added drawing of a person holding onto its fin. But it’s the exaggerated finger, seemingly being sucked on by an octopus, that has caused drivers to do a double take.

Creative Art or Accidental Innuendo?

Apple’s campaign involves combining iPhone photography with iPad-drawn illustrations. Thirteen photographers and eight artists contributed to the artwork, which is meant to blend reality with whimsy. While most of the pieces are playful and safe, this particular one—spotted on northbound I-95 by Reddit user “TommyGunMassacre”—looks rather suggestive when seen from afar.

The Miami New Times reports that the image spans around 15 feet, making its details harder to interpret from a moving vehicle. For many, it ends up looking like something out of a cheeky video game rather than a polished Apple ad.

Apple Stays Silent—For Now

Apple has not commented on the matter. The billboard remains in place, and the campaign’s Instagram post featuring the artwork is still live. Whether the image was an innocent mistake or an intentional joke by a rogue artist remains unknown.

Other pieces in the campaign include a whale eating a diver, a person napping on a cloud, and a tall woman applying makeup through building windows.

A Lighthearted Controversy

While Apple typically sticks to clean and family-friendly messaging, this ad’s unintended humor adds an unusual twist. For now, Miami commuters will have to decide for themselves whether they’re laughing at art—or with it.
