While Apple has long kept its iPads and MacBooks as separate product lines, one creator decided to merge the two. YouTuber ShuCanTech has built a custom convertible MacBook that blends the portability of an iPad Pro with the functionality of a MacBook Air.
The concept takes inspiration from early Tablet PCs but modernizes it with Apple’s latest hardware. The setup features a detachable touchscreen that works as a tablet when removed and a full laptop when docked.

How It Works
The project began by removing the display from an M1 MacBook Air. In its place, ShuCanTech 3D-printed a custom hinge and mount to attach an iPad Pro. When connected, a special shortcut triggers what the creator calls “MacBook mode,” which delivers a macOS experience on the iPad Pro’s screen.
Although the exact technical details aren’t fully explained, it appears to rely on Apple’s Sidecar or a similar technology to project macOS to the iPad. The hybrid even supports Apple Pencil input in this mode.
When the iPad Pro is detached, it seamlessly reverts to running iPadOS, effectively transforming from a macOS laptop into a standalone tablet.
Why Apple Hasn’t Done This
Apple has so far resisted merging macOS and iPadOS into a single device, arguing that each serves different needs. The company’s official stance is that users benefit from having specialized tools rather than a one-size-fits-all machine.
However, projects like this show there’s interest in a true Apple-made hybrid. By bridging the gap between productivity-focused macOS and touch-friendly iPadOS, such a device could appeal to creative professionals, students, and tech enthusiasts.
A Glimpse of What Could Be
This custom build is unlikely to push Apple into making a convertible MacBook anytime soon, but it sparks the imagination. A device that can handle both full desktop tasks and mobile workflows could redefine Apple’s portable lineup.
