Apple’s AirPods may soon take a major step forward with the addition of Live Translation. Clues from the latest iOS 26 beta suggest the feature could arrive through a software update, offering real-time language translation directly through select AirPods models.

Feature Hinted in iOS 26 Beta Code

Developers have uncovered a new system gesture in iOS 26 beta 6 linked to Live Translation. The gesture appears to involve pressing both AirPod stems at the same time, potentially triggering instant translation. While Apple has yet to confirm the feature, this discovery points toward possible support for AirPods Pro 2 and the upcoming AirPods 4.

How Live Translation Works Today

Currently, Live Translation is available on Apple Intelligence-compatible devices, including iPhone 15 Pro or newer, select iPads, and Macs with M1 or later chips. The tool can translate messages in real time in apps like iMessage, allowing users to type or receive messages in other languages without manual translation.

However, AirPods do not yet support translating live, in-person conversations—a gap this update could fill. The experience could mirror Google’s Pixel Buds or Samsung’s Live Translate, offering seamless multilingual communication on the go.

Potential Requirements and Limitations

If Apple rolls out the feature, it’s likely to be exclusive to devices that already support Apple Intelligence. This could limit access to newer AirPods paired with the latest Apple hardware. The feature may also build on Apple’s Translate app, which currently offers conversation mode but lacks the smoothness of a direct AirPods integration.

Industry Context and Competition

Competitors like Samsung and Google already offer real-time translation in their earbuds, so bringing Live Translation to AirPods would keep Apple competitive in the wearable tech space. Still, the company has been known to scrap or delay features, so there’s no guarantee it will launch.

For now, the iOS 26 beta code offers a promising glimpse into what could be one of Apple’s most impactful AirPods updates yet—one that breaks down language barriers in real time.
