Apple has opened its first Manufacturing Academy in Detroit, marking a major step in supporting U.S.-based businesses and workers. The program is part of Apple’s $500 billion commitment to investing in American industries and aims to boost advanced manufacturing skills across the country.

Launched on August 19, the two-day event was held in collaboration with Michigan State University and focused on helping small and medium-sized businesses. Early participants say the experience could play a key role in shaping their growth.

Local Businesses See Immediate Impact

Entrepreneurs from diverse industries welcomed the academy’s resources. Larry Crockett, founder of Lorraine’s Premium BBQ Sauce, praised the initiative. “I learned so much,” he told Detroit News. “I just appreciate making this platform, and it’s just my luck it’s located in Detroit”.

Detroit-based Motoren Solutions, a company providing protective equipment for the auto industry, also found the event valuable. Owner Clarke Ross said Apple’s track record inspired him. “They’ve proven success over and over again, and I hope to use those same tools to help me exceed as well”.

Training Designed for Growth

Jamie Herrera, Apple’s Director of Product Operations, highlighted that the academy focuses on teaching businesses how to identify efficiencies and strengthen operations. Attendees also had opportunities for one-on-one sessions with Apple engineers and industry experts, giving them tailored advice for their unique challenges.

The academy offers hands-on training and structured courses to help participants apply new skills directly to their businesses. Dozens of companies have already engaged with the program, and Apple plans to expand it further.

Future Expansion

Apple intends to add virtual courses later in 2025, extending the reach of the Detroit-based initiative to more businesses nationwide. The goal is to provide long-term tools and resources for American companies navigating today’s competitive manufacturing landscape.

By combining world-class expertise with practical training, Apple’s Manufacturing Academy is shaping itself as a transformative platform for U.S. entrepreneurs and small businesses looking to innovate and grow.
