The BBC has struck a deal with Apple TV+ to bring its hit comedy Trying to UK viewers at no cost. Starting September 8, 2025, the first three seasons will be available on traditional TV and BBC iPlayer. The series stars Rafe Spall and Esther Smith as a couple navigating the ups and downs of adoption.

Expanding Access Beyond Apple TV+

Apple is preparing to launch the show’s fifth season on its subscription service. As part of the agreement, the BBC also holds the option to purchase rights for future seasons, including season four. While this marks the BBC’s first deal of this kind, it follows ITVX’s earlier move to secure Suspicion, another Apple TV+ title. Unlike Suspicion, which is based on the Israeli drama False Flag, Trying is a fully original Apple production.

Apple’s Strategic Move

The deal offers clear benefits for both parties. The BBC gains access to proven content that has already resonated with audiences on a paid platform. Apple, in turn, hopes the free release of earlier seasons will encourage new fans to subscribe to Apple TV+ for upcoming episodes. This strategy mirrors a growing trend in the streaming industry: offering limited free access as a gateway to paid content.

Trying has earned recognition as Apple TV+’s longest-running sitcom. Its heartwarming mix of humor and family drama has kept audiences engaged across multiple seasons. For Apple, the partnership with the BBC helps expand the show’s reach, while giving potential subscribers a taste of its original programming.

The timing also coincides with Apple’s recent price hike in the U.S., raising monthly fees for Apple TV+ from $9.99 to $12.99. By broadening exposure overseas, Apple may offset any potential resistance from current subscribers.
