Apple has announced that iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 users will continue to enjoy free access to satellite features until 2026. The move, revealed at the company’s September 9 “Awe Dropping” event, gives millions of iPhone owners extended access to life-saving and communication tools without additional cost.
Emergency SOS and Beyond
At the core of these features is Emergency SOS via satellite. This tool allows users to reach emergency services when they are outside cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. The system guides people to point their device toward an overhead satellite, then compresses key details like injuries or emergency type into a short text message before transmitting.

The service also supports location sharing through the Find My app, making it easier for friends and family to stay updated in remote areas.
iMessage via Satellite
Apple expanded satellite connectivity in 2024 with iMessage integration. Users can now send and receive text messages, emojis, and Tapbacks without a cellular connection. Notifications prompt users to connect to the nearest satellite from the Lock screen or within Messages. This feature has quickly become valuable for hikers, campers, and anyone traveling in areas with unreliable coverage.
Broader Ecosystem Integration
Satellite connectivity is not limited to iPhones. The Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3 now include support for these features, offering another layer of safety for users on the move.
Apple’s September event also introduced other major products, including the ultra-thin iPhone Air, the iPhone 17 lineup, and the AirPods Pro 3. Yet, the free extension of satellite services highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to practical safety tools.
Looking Ahead
By keeping these features free for an extra year, Apple reinforces the value of its devices as more than just smartphones. For many, especially those in rural or outdoor environments, the extension could mean the difference between isolation and connection during an emergency.
