Apple is addressing a long-standing complaint from iPhone users with a new accessibility feature in iOS 26. The update, arriving with the iPhone 17 lineup, introduces a setting called Display Pulse Smoothing, designed to reduce screen strobing that has bothered sensitive users since the iPhone X.
What Causes Screen Strobing?
Most OLED iPhones control brightness using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). This method dims the screen by turning pixels on and off very quickly. At lower brightness levels, this creates a strobing effect, which some users find uncomfortable or even harmful over time.

How the New Toggle Works
The new setting, found under Accessibility, lets users disable PWM and choose a smoother dimming method. When activated, Display Pulse Smoothing reduces flicker at low brightness, potentially easing eye strain. However, Apple notes that turning off PWM may slightly affect display quality in dim conditions.
Availability Across Models
The feature will debut on the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple is also expected to include it on the new iPhone Air. It is the first time the company has offered an official option to limit PWM effects, giving users more control over their display experience.
A Step Toward Accessibility
This change highlights Apple’s continued focus on accessibility and user comfort. While PWM remains vital to OLED technology, offering a choice reflects growing awareness of how display technology affects health. For users who have avoided OLED iPhones due to flicker, this option could be a game-changer.
