Barely a week after the iPhone 17’s debut, rumors about the iPhone 18 have already surfaced. A new leak from Weibo’s Instant Digital suggests Apple plans to slim down the Dynamic Island on next year’s model. The leaker claims the pill-shaped cutout will be narrower due to redesigned components, freeing up more screen space for users.

No Immediate Under-Display Upgrade

While many expected Apple to hide Face ID under the display, this report insists the iPhone 18 will not include such a feature. Instead, the front sensors and camera will remain visible, though in a reduced footprint. This aligns with earlier skepticism about the readiness of under-display technology, which requires complex engineering to ensure sensors function properly behind the screen.

A Long-Running Rumor

The idea of under-display Face ID isn’t new. Analysts like Ross Young have predicted that Apple could introduce it as early as 2026, though the front-facing camera may take longer to refine. Other leakers, including Digital Chat Station, have hinted that Apple might push the perfected version of this technology to the iPhone 19, expected in 2027.

Balancing Innovation and Reliability

Apple has consistently focused on balancing cutting-edge design with dependable performance. While competitors experiment with under-display cameras, Apple appears cautious, prioritizing accuracy and security over rushing to a bezel-free look. This conservative approach may frustrate some users but reflects Apple’s emphasis on ensuring its technology works seamlessly.
