Apple’s new iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max have hit the market with an unexpected problem: scratches appearing within 24 hours. Customers in the U.S., China, and other markets reported scuffs on demo units and newly purchased devices. The issue quickly sparked a trending “scratchgate” debate online.

Aluminum Design Under Fire

Many users blame Apple’s switch from titanium to aluminum for the problem. Reports show that even light use, including charging with a MagSafe accessory, can leave visible marks on the back. Scratches appear most noticeable on the Deep Blue model, though all three colors seem affected.

YouTubers have already put the phone through durability tests. Popular tester JerryRigEverything showed how easily coins and keys could mark the camera housing and frame. While some of these videos exaggerate damage for clicks, they add to customer concerns.

Apple’s Durability Claims Questioned

Apple promoted the iPhone 17 Pro as equally durable as past models, highlighting aluminum’s strength and light weight. However, photos shared online reveal dents, broken corners, and chips in addition to surface scratches. Even protective cases may not help much. Apple’s new “plateau” design leaves parts of the phone exposed and vulnerable.

Customers Consider Skipping Upgrades

Frustration has led some customers to cancel orders or delay upgrades, echoing past durability controversies like the iPhone 5’s scuffing issues and the iPhone 6 “bendgate.” Apple has not yet addressed the complaints directly. Still, the widespread attention suggests the company may need to respond if it wants to maintain confidence in its premium lineup.
