The iPhone Air may not be Apple’s most powerful smartphone, but it could be an early preview of what the iPhone Fold will look like. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the foldable iPhone, expected in 2026, will mirror the slim profile of the Air.
Thinness as a Priority
Apple’s pursuit of ever-thinner devices plays a key role in the design. Reports suggest that when unfolded, the iPhone Fold should be about as thin as the iPhone Air. Since the device will be twice as thick when closed, Apple needs to minimize its open thickness. Some analysts believe it could be even thinner than the Air. Estimates range from 4.5mm to 4.8mm, slimmer than both the latest iPad Pro and the Air itself.

Display Expectations
Rumors indicate the foldable will feature a 7.5-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch external one. This dual-screen setup would place it between a standard iPhone and an iPad mini in size, giving Apple a new category of device.
Manufacturing Challenges
Apple continues working with suppliers to refine the foldable design. Foxconn is expected to handle much of the assembly, though India may also become a production site. Apple already builds mainstream iPhones there, and adding foldable production would fit its strategy to diversify beyond China. However, challenges remain, such as sourcing equipment and adjusting supply chains.
Price and Release Timeline
Gurman expects the iPhone Fold to carry a price tag of at least $2,000, placing it firmly in the luxury tier. Apple watchers anticipate a fall 2026 release. If the company delivers, it could kick off a new upgrade cycle, much like the original iPhone did in 2007.
