Apple has updated its website to confirm that North Dakota will soon support digital driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet. The change means residents will soon be able to store their license directly on their iPhone.
Slow Rollout Continues
Apple first announced digital ID integration in 2021, but progress has been slow. So far, only 11 states and Puerto Rico have adopted the feature. North Dakota will become the latest state to join a list that already includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, and Ohio.

Fees and Limitations
According to Apple’s updated notes, North Dakota’s Department of Transportation will require a $5 fee to add a digital license to Apple Wallet. However, the usefulness of digital IDs remains limited. At present, most states only allow them as an option at TSA checkpoints. For other situations, such as buying alcohol or presenting identification during a traffic stop, residents will still need to carry their physical card.
How to Add a Digital ID
Once the update goes live, iPhone users in North Dakota can add their license by opening the Wallet app and tapping the “+” button. The feature integrates with Apple’s biometric security tools, ensuring that access to the digital ID remains secure.
The Bigger Picture
The arrival of North Dakota highlights Apple’s gradual but steady effort to expand its digital ID ecosystem. While the vision of replacing a wallet entirely with an iPhone remains distant, the addition of more states moves Apple closer to making digital identification a standard feature across the U.S.
