Apple has acquired IC Mask Design, an Irish firm known for chip layout and processor design. The deal strengthens Apple’s custom silicon development as it continues to expand hardware capabilities.

Expanding chip design knowledge

The European Union’s acquisitions database confirmed that Apple purchased the full share capital of IC Mask Design Limited. The firm provides physical layout services for analog integrated circuits and also offers training. Since its founding in 2002, IC Mask Design has worked with more than 250 technology companies in 35 countries, including Motorola, Moortec, and Ikon Semiconductor.

Apple was not listed as a previous client, but the buyout brings that expertise in-house. IC Mask Design built its reputation by helping companies that lacked integrated circuit design skills or resources. Its team delivered projects on time and to high standards, making it a valuable partner.

Clear signs of the acquisition

The EU filing did not reveal the price or exact timing. However, records point to June 2025, around Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference. Soon after, IC Mask Design’s website went offline, and its Twitter account disappeared. Employees also updated LinkedIn to show new roles at Apple. Co-founder Ciaran Whyte confirmed his move in September.

Why this move matters

Apple has a long track record of buying companies that add crucial expertise. By acquiring IC Mask Design, Apple gains specialized talent and greater control over chip development. The move also deepens Apple’s European presence, especially in Ireland, where it already employs thousands.

This acquisition shows Apple’s intent to stay ahead in the competitive race for advanced processors while keeping more design skills within its own walls.
