Apple Adds Silicone Fix to MagSafe Chargers

Apple has started updating its MagSafe display chargers after customers noticed scratches on iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air units. The issue began when store display models showed visible marks around the MagSafe area, leading users to nickname the problem “Scratchgate.”

At first, Apple claimed the marks were not scratches but residue from the MagSafe stands that could be cleaned off. However, reports from buyers and reviewers suggested otherwise. Many users shared photos online, showing permanent scuffs appearing only days after use.

Silicone Rings Offer Simple Protection

To prevent further damage, Apple has quietly added a silicone ring to its MagSafe chargers. The ring acts as a cushion, reducing friction between the charger and the phone’s glass back.

French site Consomac first spotted the change in a local Apple Store. The modification is believed to be a temporary solution until Apple produces new display chargers. It is unclear whether this fix has been rolled out globally or only in select stores.

The adjustment appears to be an add-on rather than a full redesign. In-store staff reportedly fitted the rings onto existing MagSafe units to protect devices on display.

Apple’s Ongoing Focus on Detail

Apple introduced MagSafe display stands, also called risers, in 2021 following the iPhone 12 launch. The chargers were meant to showcase convenience and fast charging. However, with the titanium finish of the iPhone 17 Pro, these same chargers may have caused unintentional wear.

While Apple has not released an official statement, replacing and modifying the stands shows the company is taking action. The fix might be small, but it demonstrates Apple’s quick response to user feedback and its dedication to product quality.
