Apple’s digital Car Key feature is heading to select General Motors (GM) vehicles, giving drivers a new way to unlock and start their cars using their iPhone or Apple Watch. Hidden code in Apple’s system files reveals that GM brands such as Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac are preparing to support the technology.
Originally launched in 2020, Apple Car Key lets users unlock, lock, and start a vehicle through the Wallet app. The feature uses Near Field Communication (NFC) or Ultra-Wideband (UWB) to detect nearby Apple devices. With it, users can either tap their iPhone on the car handle or simply walk up to the vehicle to unlock it instantly.

Electric Vehicles Lead the Rollout
At WWDC 2025, Apple confirmed that 13 new car brands would join the Car Key ecosystem. Among them are GM’s 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV and 2026 GMC Sierra EV, two of the company’s flagship electric trucks. Additional GM models are expected to follow as Apple expands its automotive partnerships.
This collaboration strengthens Apple’s reach in the North American vehicle market, where GM remains one of the biggest automakers. By integrating Car Key into its electric lineup, GM aims to deliver a more seamless and high-tech ownership experience.
The Future of Keyless Driving
The expansion highlights Apple’s growing push into the automotive world. As digital keys become more common, Apple envisions a future where drivers rely entirely on their devices instead of physical key fobs. The system allows for secure sharing, letting users send virtual car keys to family or friends via iMessage.
Although Apple has not confirmed an official launch date, sources say that GM’s integration testing is already underway. Once the rollout begins, Car Key users will gain more convenience, stronger security, and a glimpse into the fully connected driving experience Apple continues to build.
