Apple is turning the iPhone into a true all-in-one device. With the latest Car Key expansion, users can now unlock, start, and share cars using only their iPhone—no physical key required.
First introduced at WWDC 2020, Car Key integrates directly into the Wallet app. The feature lets drivers lock or start vehicles through NFC and U1 ultra-wideband chips, even when the phone is tucked inside a pocket or bag.

If the iPhone battery runs out, Car Key continues to work for up to five hours, ensuring drivers can still access their cars. Apple also allows users to share digital keys securely via iMessage. With a few taps, car owners can send or revoke access through iCloud, giving full control over who can use the vehicle.
Automakers Join the Apple Ecosystem
BMW became the first automaker to adopt Car Key in 2021 with its 5 Series. Since then, Apple has expanded partnerships across both luxury and mainstream brands.
At WWDC 2025, Apple confirmed that 13 more manufacturers are joining the initiative, including Cadillac, Porsche, Genesis, Hyundai, Smart, Audi, and Polestar. Models such as the Audi A5, Hyundai IONIQ 6, and Mini Cooper now feature the technology.
Car Key works through Apple Wallet’s express mode, allowing instant access without requiring Face ID or passcodes. While Apple hinted at upcoming features—like setting driver limits for teens—those additions haven’t arrived yet.
Apple’s Vision for a Keyless Future
Apple’s expansion of Car Key highlights its goal of making the iPhone central to everyday life. The company already integrates payment systems, transit passes, and IDs into its ecosystem. Adding car access is another step toward a fully connected experience.
As more automakers embrace the technology, Apple moves closer to eliminating traditional car keys altogether. With Car Key, convenience, control, and connectivity are literally in the driver’s hands.
