Rivian Adopts Apple Car Key, But Still Skips CarPlay

Rivian owners will soon unlock and start their electric vehicles using Apple Car Key. The feature is coming to second-generation R1S and R1T models through the 2025.46 software update later this month. It moves the main digital key directly into Apple Wallet, so drivers no longer need the Rivian app for basic access.

With the update, an iPhone or Apple Watch can lock, unlock, or start the vehicle. Ultra Wideband (UWB) hardware inside the Gen 2 R1 lineup allows the system to read proximity with far better accuracy than the older Bluetooth-based system.

More Reliable Access and Easier Sharing

The new Car Key supports Express Mode, so the key keeps working for hours even when an iPhone is low on battery. NFC also works as a backup, which helps prevent drivers from getting locked out.

Rivian says owners can share up to eight digital keys through Messages, AirDrop, or other supported apps. The process works just like sharing transit passes or tickets in Apple Wallet, which makes it simple and familiar.

The company also supports Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet on compatible Android devices. This cross-platform approach shows Rivian’s interest in making digital keys a universal access tool rather than a feature tied to one company.

Why Gen 1 Misses Out

First-generation R1 vehicles will not receive Apple Car Key support. According to Rivian, the older hardware cannot support UWB features, and the limitation comes from the physical design of the earlier platform.

No Sign of CarPlay

Even with the Apple Car Key upgrade, Rivian still refuses to add CarPlay. The company continues to promote its own in-car software and shows no interest in changing that stance. Rivian prefers to control the entire cabin interface, even as Apple Car Key integrates more deeply with its vehicles.

A Step Forward for Rivian

Digital keys are quickly becoming standard across modern EVs. Rivian’s update helps it match expectations in the market and gives drivers faster, more reliable access. While the company still avoids CarPlay, Apple Car Key marks a meaningful improvement for daily use and shared driving.
