The American Film Institute (AFI) has selected three Apple TV+ series for its prestigious 2025 television honors. The shows—Pluribus, Severance, and The Studio—earned recognition for their strong storytelling, creative vision, and cultural relevance. Each year, AFI highlights ten television programs that best represent the most meaningful achievements in screen entertainment.
Why These Shows Stood Out
AFI looks beyond ratings and popularity. Instead, it focuses on artistic impact and cultural significance. Severance impressed judges with its sharp social commentary and bold visual style. Meanwhile, Pluribus gained praise for its timely themes and character-driven narrative. At the same time, The Studio stood out for its creative risk-taking and strong ensemble performances.

Together, these series reflect Apple TV+’s steady rise as a serious player in premium television. While Apple TV+ launched only in late 2019, it has earned AFI recognition almost every year since.
A Growing Track Record for Apple TV+
Apple TV+ already has a strong history with AFI. Past honorees include Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Pachinko, Shrinking, and Schmigadoon!. Notably, Ted Lasso received AFI honors twice, a milestone now matched by Severance. In film categories, Apple also found success with CODA and The Tragedy of Macbeth.
Because of this consistency, the latest recognition reinforces Apple’s long-term commitment to quality storytelling rather than volume.
Industry Voices and Upcoming Ceremony
AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale praised the selected series, highlighting how they showcase the power of art during challenging times. Moreover, a diverse jury of industry professionals chose the winners, including acclaimed director Thomas Schlamme and actress Lily Gladstone.
AFI will officially honor the winners at a ceremony on January 9, 2026. Meanwhile, Severance and Pluribus continue to build momentum, as both series also earned Golden Globe nominations this awards season.
What This Means for Streaming
Ultimately, AFI’s recognition signals a shift in the streaming landscape. As competition grows, platforms like Apple TV+ gain credibility by focusing on thoughtful, high-impact content that resonates with audiences and critics alike.
