Apple has released new security updates for several older devices, including the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and Apple TV HD. The updates focus on fixing security vulnerabilities rather than adding new features.

Although Apple usually highlights updates for newer hardware, this release shows the company still supports select older models when serious risks appear.

What the Updates Include

Apple issued two small firmware builds designed for specific devices. One update aligns with tvOS 26.2 and targets the fourth-generation Apple TV HD and certain HomePod models. The other update applies to iOS and iPadOS 18.7.3 and covers older iPhones and iPads.

For iPhone users, the update applies to the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max in China. On the iPad side, Apple pushed the update to the seventh-generation iPad, both Wi-Fi and cellular models.

Notably, Apple did not publish detailed release notes. However, experts believe the patches address security flaws similar to those fixed in newer operating system releases.

Why These Updates Matter

Security updates for aging hardware are rare but important. Hackers often target older devices because they lack the newest protections. By issuing these patches, Apple reduces the risk of exploits that could expose personal data or compromise device performance.

Earlier this month, Apple fixed several major vulnerabilities in WebKit and the system kernel. While those fixes focused on newer devices, Apple typically applies similar protections to supported older hardware when possible.

How Users Can Install the Update

Users can check for the update by opening Settings, selecting General, and tapping Software Update. Apple recommends installing the patch as soon as it appears.

Although the updates do not add visible changes, they play a key role in keeping devices secure. Delaying installation could leave users exposed to known threats.

Apple’s Ongoing Support Strategy

Apple has a long history of supporting devices well beyond their release years. While older models no longer receive full feature updates, targeted security fixes help extend their safe use.

This latest update reinforces that approach. Even as Apple focuses on future products, it continues to protect millions of users still relying on older devices.
