Apple is preparing to expand its digital driver’s license feature to more parts of the United States, marking another step toward wider adoption of mobile IDs. The company confirmed that at least seven additional states have agreed to support driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet, although exact launch dates remain unclear.
What the Apple Wallet ID Feature Does
Apple Wallet allows users to store a digital version of their driver’s license or state ID on an iPhone or Apple Watch. Users can present this digital ID to verify identity or age at select airports, businesses, and apps. Importantly, the feature does not replace a physical ID, and users still need to carry their physical license for most situations.

To set it up, users open the Wallet app, tap the plus icon, and follow the guided steps. Apple emphasizes privacy, as the system shares only necessary information rather than full personal details.
States That Already Support Digital IDs
Currently, the feature works in 13 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. These include Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, Ohio, Hawaii, California, Iowa, New Mexico, Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia, and Illinois. Each state joined the program at different times, with the most recent additions rolling out through late 2025.
In addition, Apple Wallet IDs are accepted at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints in more than 250 U.S. airports for domestic travel. Travelers should still check airport signage, as availability can vary by location.
New States Joining the Program
Looking ahead, Apple confirmed that seven more states have signed on to support the feature. These states include Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Utah, Arkansas, and Virginia. However, Apple and local DMV offices have not shared firm timelines for when residents in these states will be able to add IDs to Apple Wallet.
Digital ID Is Not a Full Replacement
Apple also notes important limits. Law enforcement does not accept Apple Wallet IDs, and users must still carry a physical license. For travelers in states without Wallet IDs, Apple offers a Digital ID option based on a U.S. passport for use at participating TSA checkpoints, though it cannot be used for international travel.
