Apple is reportedly planning a major shift in its laptop lineup with a low-cost MacBook expected to launch in early 2026. The device aims to attract students, families, and budget-conscious users. Unlike previous models, this MacBook could compete directly with Chromebooks and affordable Windows laptops. Currently, Apple’s cheapest laptop is the $999 MacBook Air, but the new model should cost less.
Compact Design With Practical Trade-Offs
According to current details, the upcoming MacBook will feature a display close to 13 inches. That makes it slightly smaller than the 13.6-inch MacBook Air. Apple is unlikely to prioritize an ultra-thin design. Instead, the company appears focused on durability and battery life.
The display will reportedly use standard LCD technology. It will not include mini-LED or ProMotion features. However, Apple may offer the laptop in bright colors to appeal to younger users. Some reports also suggest a possible return to plastic casing to keep costs low.
Powered by the A18 Pro Chip
The most notable change comes inside the device. Apple plans to power the MacBook with the A18 Pro chip, first introduced in the iPhone 16 Pro. Built on a second-generation 3-nanometer process, the chip delivers strong performance while using less power.
Benchmarks show the A18 Pro performs on par with Apple’s earlier M-series chips for everyday tasks. As a result, users can expect smooth web browsing, document editing, photo work, and even light video editing. Additionally, the laptop will support Apple Intelligence features and run full macOS.
Battery Life and Limited Ports
Thanks to the chip’s efficiency, the MacBook could match or exceed MacBook Air battery life. Apple may limit ports to one or two USB-C connections, which aligns with the device’s budget focus.
Pricing and Launch Timeline
While Apple has not confirmed pricing, industry expectations place the laptop well under $1,000. Analysts suggest a price between $499 and $799 would fit Apple’s lineup. The low-cost MacBook is expected to launch in the first half of 2026, possibly alongside updated MacBook Air models.
